"How to talk with pupils about the end of life and hospice volunteering" is a textbook published recently by Hospice Foundation Poland. The book has been published in 10 000 copies and is given for free to the schools across Poland. "How to talk with students..." has been recommended by the Minister of Education, gained countrywide media coverage and recognition among the teachers.
Some parts of the textbook are written by the teachers who cooperate with hospices and encourage their pupils to support hospices as students. The other parts of the book help its readers to talk with children about death and illness, explain the process of bereavement and show how to use voluntary service in working with "difficult youth".
The book has been writen within a 3-years long voluntary service development programme "I like to help". The programme is run by Hospice Foundation Poland and is sponsored by the PZU Foundation. There are 96 hospices that take part in the programme. Their voluntary service coordinators take part in trainings and e-learning courses, they also exchange their experiences on a web forum and a portal that were designed especially for their use. First two years of the "I like to help" programme were dedicated to encouraging young people to help the hospices. Its third and last year has just started and is focused on a volunteering of people aged 50 or more.
